Chancellor's Certificate in Internetworking with Routers

Overview

As companies depend on the Internet to conduct all phases of their business, there is an increasing demand for interconnecting computers to improve communication and widen access to information and computing resources. The skills needed for working with complex networks have become valuable, and often essential, for IT professionals. Today's network administrators must be versed in the fundamentals of router architecture, and the commands to design, configure, and troubleshoot routers to solve network communication problems. This certificate program provides you with the tools you need to plan and implement a strategy for interconnecting your company's resources.

You'll learn to:
  • Handle complex issues such as incompatible desktop operating systems, mixed-vendor hardware platforms, and dissimilar application file formats.
  • Determine whether to use bridges, switches, or routers to connect your networks.
  • Design networks for optimal IP efficiency.
  • Understand and identify the differences between the various routing protocols.
  • Use IP subnetting in a real environment.

Prerequisites
You should have a working knowledge of network terminology and be comfortable with an industry standard operating system. You are required to complete any prerequisites listed for certificate classes. (These classes will not count toward the required 54 hours.) Be sure to check the course descriptions for specific prerequisites.

Certificate Class Requirements
A minimum of 54 hours is required – 42 hours for core classes and a choice of 12 hours from elective classes listed below. Note: You may substitute the 5-day Cisco Week: Router Fundamentals for Introduction to Bridges, Switches, and Routers and Intermediate Applications of Routers.

Core Classes
(minimum 42 hours required)
Introduction to Bridges, Switches, and Routers* (12 hours)
Intermediate Applications of Routers* (12 hours)
Advanced Applications of Routers (12 hours)
Advanced Routers: Wide Area Networks (12 hours)
Advanced TCP/IP

* You may take both of these classes (Introduction to and Intermediate Routers) toward the 42 hour requirement, or you may take the 5-day Cisco Week: Router Fundamentals. Hours earned for the fifth day of this class do not count toward this certificate.

Electives
(minimum 12 hours required)
Advanced UNIX Scripting: SED and AWK (12 hours)
Managing a UNIX System (12 hours)

Linux Configuration (6 hours)
Advanced Linux Configuration (6 hours)

Advanced System Administration of Windows Server 2003 (12 hours)

Certificate Requirements
Complete the application form and return it with your $25 nonrefundable fee. All classes must be completed through the UM-St. Louis Microcomputer Program within two years of submitting the application. (Note: Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis; submitting the application and paying the fee doesn’t guarantee a seat in any class.)

If you have completed one or more of these classes through the Microcomputer Program in the 24 months prior to completing your application, they may be applied to this certificate.

Note: A class can be applied to only one specialized certificate.

Note: You do not have to be enrolled in the Certificate program to take these classes.

Note: You also receive CEUs for successful completion of each class. Students completing the Internetworking with Routers Chancellor's Certificate receive at least 5.4 CEUs. The hours completed in these classes will also be applied toward the 96-hour Chancellor's Certificate on the Computer. Other certificates are also available.
