Linux Installation
(Prerequisite: Intermediate Commands of UNIX and Intermediate TCP/IP or equivalent experience. Students will use the following UNIX commands: ls, cat, cd, pico or vi, cp, rm, mv, pwd, telnet, login, touch, more, mkdir, rmdir, and ping.) Practice installing the Linux operating system in dual-boot and single-boot environments. Understand the steps necessary to plan for a successful installation, including learning how to format, partition, and create file systems for the Linux platform. Learn techniques and commands for troubleshooting installations and verifying and logging IP services, such as Web, e-mail, FTP, and DNS. Learn when and how to rebuild the Linux kernel. Additional topics include understanding the background of Linux, its potential, and its various distributions; mounting file systems; and creating users and passwords from the command line.

Linux Configuration
(Prerequisite: Linux Installation or equivalent experience.) This hands-on course, a continuation of the Linux Installation class, will teach you how to configure the Linux operating system. Learn how to configure the FTP server and the mail server and maintain system files. Learn how to do a basic configuration of the Apache Web Server. Understand how to install SAMBA and do Linux-to-Windows communication. Additional topics include system maintenance, managing printers and communication lines, setting up new user accounts, validating users, and Linux-to-Linux communication.

This is a continuation of the Linux Configuration course for those who want to gain a more in-depth understanding of the Linux operating system. Learn how to configure Linux on a production server for business and commercial applications. Topics include installing, configuring, and testing DNS and NFS. Additional topics include more detailed discussions of SAMBA and how to configure an Apache Web Server.

Linux Firewalls
(Prerequisite: Advanced TCP/IP, Intermediate Commands of UNIX, and Advanced Linux Configuration or equivalent experience.) This course will teach you how to apply basic firewall concepts in a Linux environment, using the netfilter iptables command. The class starts off with the basic concept of a firewall and firewall terminology. Learn differences between commercial firewalls, open software (free) firewalls, and intrusion detection systems. Learn how to configure a standard Linux computer for routing and firewall protection. Learn which services will be restricted by the firewall, including SMTP, DNS, HTTP, and SSH. There will be several hands-on firewall configurations performed in class, including standalone and dual network.
